बेल्लारी एयरपोर्ट से टैक्सी लेकर हम हम्पी के लिए रवाना हुए तो उसके बारे में किताबी जानकारी ही थी पर वहां पहुंच कर जो देखा, वह अद्भुत-अविश्वसनीय था। भारतीय वास्तुकला और धार्मिक-सांस्कृतिक विरासत ने मानो हमें अपने आंचल में सहेज लिया। तुंगभद्रा नदी के दक्षिणी तट पर हेम कूट पर्वत की तलहटी पर स्थित 50 मीटर ऊंचे गोपुरम वाला विरूपाक्ष मन्दिर हमें आशीष दे रहा था। (Virupaksha Temple: Rich Heritage of Indian Architecture)

यूं तो पूरा हम्पी ही यूनेस्को की विश्व विरासत स्थल सूची में शामिल है पर विरूपाक्ष मन्दिर (Virupaksha Temple) की विशालता और शिल्प सौन्दर्य का अलग ही आकर्षण है। इसका निर्माण विजयनगर के शासक देवराय द्वितीय की पत्नी रानी लोकमाह देवी के आदेश पर साम्राज्य के एक सरदार लक्कन दण्डेश द्वारा कराया गया था। इसकी दीवारों पर मौजूद सातवीं शताब्दी के शिलालेख इसकी समृद्ध विरासत का प्रमाण हैं।

मन्दिर में मुख्य़ देवता देवाधिदेव महादेव, देवी पार्वती, भगवान गणेश तथा देवी भुवनेश्वरी और पम्पा की मूर्तियां हैं। मन्दिर में पूर्व की ओर नन्दी की विशाल प्रतिमा है। यहां अन्य देवी-देवताओं की प्रतिमाएं भी हैं। बताया जाता है कि इस मन्दिर के निर्माण के समय यहां पर इतनी प्रतिमाएं नहीं थीं लेकिन समय के साथ-साथ यहां पर प्रतिमाओं की संख्या में बढ़ोतरी होती गयी। विरूपाक्ष मन्दिर के आसपास छोटे-छोटे कई और मन्दिर हैं जो कि विभिन्न देवी देवताओं को समर्पित हैं। तुर्कों और मुगलों ने हम्पी पर कई बार आक्रण किया और शहर को तहस-नहस कर दिया लेकिन विरूपाक्ष मन्दिर नगर के हृदयस्थल पर आज भी शान के साथ खड़ा है।

विरूपाक्ष मन्दिर

पौराणिक मान्यता

माना जाता है हम्पी ही रामायण काल का किष्किन्धा है। विरूपाक्ष मन्दिर में स्थापित शिवलिंग की कहानी लंकापित रावण और भगवान शिव से जुड़ी हुई है। पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार रावण भगवान शिव के दिये हुए शिवलिंग को लेकर लंका वापस जाते समय यहां से गुजर रहा था। इसी दौरान लघुशंका आने पर उसने ब्राह्मण वेशधारी भगवान विष्णु को यह शिवलिंग पकड़ने के लिए दिया। उस वृद्ध ने शिवलिंग को जमीन पर रख दिया। रावण लाख कोशिशों के बावजूद शिवलिंग को उठाना तो दूर रहा, हिला तक नहीं सका। यह शिवलिंग दक्षिण की ओर झुका हुआ है। मन्दिर की दीवारों पर इस प्रसंग को उत्कीर्ण किया गया है। एक अन्य मान्यता के अनुसार भगवान शिव द्वारा रावण को दिया गया शिवलिंग झारखण्ड के देवघर में है जिसे वैद्यनाथ के रूप में पूजा जाता है।

यहां अर्ध सिंह और अर्ध मनुष्य की देह धारण किए नृसिंह भगवान विष्णु की 6.7 मीटर ऊंची मूर्ति है। किंवदन्ति है कि भगवान विष्णु ने इस जगह को अपने रहने के लिए कुछ अधिक ही बड़ा समझा और क्षीरसागर वापस लौट गये।

आस-पास के दर्शनीय स्थल

कमल महल :

कमल महल, हम्पी

खिले हुए कमल पुष्प के जैसी संरचना वाले इस महल का इस्तेमाल रानिवास के तौर पर किया जाता था। राजा कृष्णदेव राय भी अपने मन्त्रियों के साथ यहां बैठकें करते थे। मुगल आक्रमणकारियों ने इस महल को काफी क्षति पहुंचाई लेकिन अब इसका जीर्णोद्धार कर दिया गया है। आज यह हम्पी शहर के सबसे प्रतिष्ठित स्थलों में से एक है। इसमें कुल 24 स्तम्भ हैं। यहां आठ कमल के मेहराब का डिजाइन बनाया गया था जिस पर बारीक नक्काशी है।

विठ्ठल मन्दिर :

विट्ठल मन्दिर, हम्पी

इस मन्दिर का निर्माण राजा देवराय द्वितीय के शासनकाल के दौरान किया गया था। इसमें रंग मण्डप और 56 संगीतमय स्तम्भ हैं जिनमें से कुछ को थपथपाने पर संगीतमय ध्वनि सुनाई देता है। यह भारत के तीन प्रसिद्ध प्रस्तर रथों में से एक है। अन्य दो रथ कोणार्क (ओडिशा) और महाबलीपुरम (तमिलनाडु) में हैं। यह मन्दिर भगवान विष्णु के अंशावतार भगवान विट्ठल को समर्पित है।

लक्ष्मी नरसिम्हा मन्दिर :

लक्ष्मी नरसिम्हा मन्दिर, हम्पी

इस मन्दिर का निर्माण 1528 ईस्वी में राजा कृष्णदेव राय के शासनकाल के दौरान हुआ था। इस मन्दिर का मुख्य आकर्षण है आदिशेष (सात सिरों वाले नाग) की शय्या पर बैठे नरसिंह भगवान (भगवान विष्णु के अवतार) की 6.7 मीटर ऊंची पत्थर की मूर्ति। इस मूर्ति पर भगवान की जंघा पर बैठी देवी लक्ष्मी की आकृति भी थी। 1565 ईस्वी में अक्रमणकारियों ने देवी लक्ष्मी की आकृति को तोड़ दिया। देवी लक्ष्मी की यह मूर्ति अब कमलापुरा संग्रहालय में है।

हाथी अस्तबल :  विजयनगर साम्राज्य के दिनों में इस भवन का इस्तेमाल शाही हाथियों के लिए एक बाड़े के रूप में किया जाता था। यहां 11 कक्ष हैं जिनकी छत बहुत ऊंची है। इनमें से 10 कमरों में विशाल गुम्बद हैं। ईस भवन का मेहराबदार प्रवेश द्वार अत्यन्त सुन्दर हैष

बन्दर मन्दिर : यह मन्दिर विरूपाक्ष मन्दिर से करीब दो किलोमीटर दूर अंजनेया पहाड़ी पर है। हालांकि यह मन्दिर हनुमान जी को समर्पित है और इसे यन्त्रोधारा मन्दिर भी कहते हैं लेकिन मन्दिर और उसके आसपास बन्दरों की बहुतायत के चलते इसे बन्दर मन्दिर कहा जाने लगा। इसी मन्दिर के पास एक और छोटा मन्दिर है जो भगवान विष्णु के श्रीनिवास स्वरूप को समर्पित है।

मतंग पर्वत :  मान्यता है कि रामायण काल में इसी पहाड़ी पर मतंग मुनि का आश्रम था। पर्यटक हाइकिंग अथवा ट्रैकिंग कर यहां तक पहुंच सकते हैं।

हेमकुन्ता पहाड़ी मन्दिर :

हेमकुता पहाड़ी मन्दिर, हम्पी

हेमकुन्ता पहाड़ी पर स्थित यह मन्दिर नन्दीस्वर भगवान शिव को समर्पित है। यहां भगवान शिव के अलावा अन्य देवी-देवताओं की पूजा-अर्चना भी की जाती है।

हम्पी बाजार : विरूपाक्ष मन्दिर (Virupaksha Temple) के ठीक सामने स्थित एक किलोमीटर से ज्यादा लम्बे इस बाजार में स्थानीय हस्तशिल्प उत्पादों की कई दुकानें हैं। यहां से स्मृति चिन्ह, कशीदाकारी शॉल, फाइबर हस्तशिल्प और पत्थर की नक्काशी वाली वस्तुएं खरीदी जा सकती हैं।

हम्पी घूमने का सबसे अच्छा समय

यहां पूरे साल पर्यटकों और श्रद्धालुओं का तांता लगा रहता है। उचित यही रहेगा कि ग्रीष्म एवं वर्षा ऋतुओं में यहां न जायें। अप्रैल, मई और जून में यहां पत्थर तपने लगते हैं और चलना-फिरना दूभर हो जाता है जबकि बारिश होने पर फिसलन हो जाती है।

ऐसे पहुंचें हम्पी

वायु मार्ग : निकटतम हवाईअड्डा बेल्लारी एयरपोर्ट यहां से करीब 64 किलोमीटर दूर है।

रेल मार्ग : निकटतम रेलवे स्टेशन होसापेट (होस्पेट) है जहां से विरूपाक्ष मन्दिर करीब 14 किलोमीटर पड़ता है। बंगलुरु सिटी जंक्शन, यशवन्तपुर जंक्शन, बेल्लारी जंक्शन आदि से यहां के लिए कई ट्रेन हैं।

सड़क मार्ग :  यह मन्दिर बेल्लारी से करीब 66 किमी, ऐतिहासिक शहर एहोल से 140, बंगलुरु से 341, मैसूर से 427 और मंगलोर (मंगलुरु) से करीब 472 किलोमीटर दूर है।
