हमारे शरीर मे दो लाख जींस इसलिए काम कर रहे हैं क्योंकि इंसान जैसी कॉम्प्लेक्स संरचना का इससे कम में काम भी नहीं चलेगा। पर इन दो लाख में से 10% ही हमारे हैं, बाकी 90% जींस उन सूक्ष्मजीवों के हैं जो हमारे शरीर में आश्रय लिये हुए हैं।

हिन्दी में ज्ञान-विज्ञान पर अच्छी पुस्तकों का अभाव है। इंटरनेट पर भी हिन्दी में अच्छी और ताजातरीन जानकारी नहीं मिल पाती है। मुझे इसके दो कारण लगते हैं- पहला यह कि हिन्दी में कोई भी मौलिक शोध नहीं हो रहा है, और दूसरा यह कि मेरे जैसे लोग अंग्रेजी और हिन्दी दोनों भाषाएं जानते हैं औऱ अंग्रेजी में नया ज्ञान-विज्ञान पढ़ते भी हैं। लेकिन, अपने आलस के कारण अंग्रेजी से लिया ज्ञान हिन्दी के पाठकों तक नहीं पहुंचा रहे हैं। कोरोना लॉकडाउन में मैंने स्वास्थ्य विज्ञान पर कई अच्छी पुस्तकें पढ़ी थीं। मुझे लगता है कि उनसे जो कुछ भी मैंने जाना है वह आप तक पहुंच पाये तो मेरा पढ़ना सार्थक हो जाएगा। (The mysterious world of microorganisms in the human body)

ऐसी ही एक किताब प्रसिद्ध माइक्रो बायोलॉजिस्ट एलेना कोलन की “10% ह्यूमन” है जिसको पढ़कर मेरे दिमाग के सोचने का तरीका ही बदल गया। काफी दिनों से सोच रहा था कि आपको इस ज्ञान के बारे में बताया जाए। एक आलेख में तो यह सारा तो नहीं आएगा पर ऐसे ही एक-एक विषय पर मूड बनता रहा तो लिखता रहूंगा।

इस किताब में एलेना कोलन ने बताया है कि हम सिर्फ 10% ही इंसान हैं, बाकी 90% बैक्टीरिया, वायरस, फंगस आदि सूक्ष्म जीवों (Microbes) से बने हैं। नब्बे के दशक में जब ह्यूमन जीनोम प्रोजेक्ट शुरू हुआ था, तब आपने उसके बारे में मीडिया में काफी पढ़ा होगा कि किस तरह उस समय दावे किए जा रहे थे कि हम अब डिजाइनर बेबी बना सकेंगे और इंसानों से जुड़े तमाम तरह के रहस्य खुल जाएंगे। इस प्रोजेक्ट में जब जींस के बारे में पता लगाया जा रहा था तो वैज्ञानिकों को आश्चर्य हुआ की हम इंसानों में 22,000 के आस-पास ही जींस है जबकि फल की एक मक्खी में 25,000 और धान के एक पौधे में 42,000 के आसपास जींस होते हैं। जब यह पता चला तो हम इंसानों के अहंकार को बहुत ठेस पहुंची कि हम इंसान हैं, हमारे अंदर की क्रिया-प्रणाली इतनी कांप्लेक्स है फिर भी हमारा काम इतने कम जींस से कैसे चल रहा है। इस पर आगे रिसर्च की गई तो पता चला कि हमारे शरीर में दो लाख के आसपास जींस काम करते हैं।

जो लोग जीन्स को नहीं समझते हैं उन्हें बता दूं कि जींस एक तरह के ब्लूप्रिंट होते हैं और हमारे शरीर की कोशिकाओं में होते हैं। ये जींस ही कोशिकाओं को बताते हैं कि किस चीज़ का शरीर मे निर्माण करना है। हमारा गोरा, काला, लंबा नाटा, मोटा, पतला, बुद्धिमान, मूर्ख आदि होना काफी हद तक जींस पर ही निर्भर करता है।

हमारे शरीर मे दो लाख जींस इसलिए काम कर रहे हैं क्योंकि इंसान जैसी कॉम्प्लेक्स संरचना का इससे कम में काम भी नहीं चलेगा। पर इन दो लाख में से 10% ही हमारे हैं, बाकी 90% जींस उन सूक्ष्मजीवों के हैं जो हमारे शरीर में आश्रय लिये हुए हैं। ह्यूमन जीनोम की गुत्थी जितनी सुलझनी थी उससे ज्यादा उलझ रही थी। फिर वैज्ञानिकों को लगा कि इस पर और रिसर्च की जरूरत है। अमेरिकी सरकार ने ह्यूमन जीनोम के बाद ह्यूमन बायोम प्रोजेक्ट की शुरुआत की। आज जो नई जानकारी ह्यूमन बायोम के बारे में सामने आ रही है वह सब इस प्रोजेक्ट का ही परिणाम है।

तो बात हो रही थी हमारे शरीर में रहने वाले सूक्ष्म जीवों की। इसमें हम दोनों का स्वार्थ छिपा है। हम उन्हें संरक्षण और भोजन देते हैं, बदले में वे हमारे लिए काम करते हैं। और ऐसा भी नहीं है कि वे हमारे लिए कोई कम महत्वपूर्ण कार्य कर रहे हैं। वे हमारे लिए सबसे महत्वपूर्ण कार्य कर रहे होते हैं जैसे विभिन्न हारमोंस का बनाना, विटामिनों और प्रोटीन का संश्लेषण करना, भोजन का पाचन करना आदि। यहां तक कि हमारे दिमाग के लिए जो सबसे महत्वपूर्ण हार्मोन सेरेटोनिन है, वह भी हमारी आंतों में स्थित जीवाणु ही बनाते हैं।

हम लोग सूक्ष्म जीवों को दुश्मन ही ज्यादा समझते आये हैं क्योंकि जब भी कोई नई बीमारी आती है तो उसके पीछे इन्हीं में से किसी का नाम लिया जाता है। लेकिन, दुश्मन माइक्रोब यानि कि सूक्ष्म जीवों की संख्या बहुत ही कम है, दोस्त ज्यादा हैं पर चंद बुरे सूक्ष्म जीवों के चक्कर में हम इस पूरी कौम को ही अपना दुश्मन मान बैठे हैं। तभी तो हम एंटीबायोटिक, साबुन, फिनाइल, सेनेटाइजर और पता नही कौन-कौन से क्लीनर इस्तेमाल कर इन्हें मारने पर तुले रहते हैं।

इस पुस्तक में सूक्ष्म जीवों से जुड़े कई ऐसे रहस्यों का खुलासा किया गया है जो प्रचलित मान्यता के अनुकूल नहीं हैं। पर ये बातें विज्ञान की खोजों के बाद ही पता चलीं है, इसलिए मानना तो पड़ेगा ही।
