राष्ट्रपति शहाबुद्दीन ने साक्षात्कार के दौरान 5 अगस्त की घटना को याद करते हुए कहा, “सुबह साढ़े दस बजे मुझे शेख हसीना के आवास से फोन आया जिसमें बताया गया कि वह उनसे मिलेंगी। एक घंटे बाद फिर कॉल आई जिसमें कहा गया कि वह नहीं आ रही है। इसके कुछ देर बाद मैंने सुना कि हसीना मुझे बताए बिना देश छोड़कर चली गई हैं।” शहाबुद्दीन ने आगे कहा कि हमें पता चला कि हसीना ने इस्तीफा दे दिया है लेकिन शायद उसे हमें सूचित करने का समय नहीं मिला। कुछ दिन बाद कैबिनेट सचिव उनके इस्तीफे की कॉपी लेने आए तो मैंने उनसे कहा कि मैं भी इसकी तलाश कर रहा हूं।  उन्होंने कहा कि इस पर अब बहस करने का कोई मतलब नहीं है; हसीना जा चुकी हैं और यह सच है।

राष्ट्रपति शहाबुद्दीन ने कहा, “हर जगह अशांति की खबरें थीं। मैंने अपने सैन्य सचिव जनरल आदिल (मेजर जनरल मोहम्मद आदिल चौधरी) से इस पर गौर करने के लिए कहा। उनके पास भी कोई जानकारी नहीं थी। हम इंतजार कर रहे थे और टीवी स्क्रॉल देख रहे थे। कोई खबर नहीं थी। एक समय, मैंने सुना कि वह (हसीना) मुझे बताए बिना देश छोड़कर चली गईं।”
