भारत में रबर को लाने का श्रेय सर हेनरी विलियम को है जो सन् 1876 में ब्राजील के पारा से रबर का बीज यहां लाये। दक्षिण भारत में इसकी पौध उगाने का प्रयोग सफल रहा। देखते ही देखते पूर्वी और पश्चिमी घाटों के पहाड़ों पर रबर के बागान विकसित होने लगे।

दुनिया की सबसे घुमक्कड़ वनस्पतियों की चर्चा होते ही जो नाम सबसे पहले कौंधते हैं, वे हैं- आलू, टमाटर, काजू, कॉफी और अनानास। इसी टोली का एक और यायावर सदस्य है रबर। भूमध्य रेखीय सदाबहार वनों की इस पैदावार का मूल स्थान दक्षिण अमेरिका का अमेजन बेसिन माना जाता है। इसके दूध जिसे लेटेक्स कहते हैं, से रबर तैयार की जाती है। इसका वानस्पतिक नाम हैविया ब्रजीलिएन्सिस है जो इसकी पितृ-भूमि ब्राजील के नाम पर रखा गया है।
चौदहवीं और पन्द्रहवीं शताब्दी तक इसका इस्तेमाल रस्सी और बर्तन बनाने में किया जाता था। आदिम जनजातियां परम्परागत चित्रकारी करते समय निशान या रेखायें मिटाने में भी इसका इस्तेमाल करती थीं। इसकी इसी खासियत से समुद्र के रास्ते व्यापार करने वाले अंग्रेज बहुत प्रभावित हुए और इसके बीज और पौधे दक्षिणी पूर्वी एशिया में ले गये। यहां की सरजमीं इसे बहुत रास आयी और देखते ही मलेशिया, इण्डोनेशिया, श्रीलंका, थाईलैण्ड आदि में लाखों हेक्टेयर जमीन पर इसके बागान विकसित होने लगे। चीन के कुछ क्षेत्रों में भी इसका प्लान्टेशन शुरू हो गया। हालांकि ऐसे भी कुछ प्रमाण मिले हैं कि दक्षिण पूर्व एशिया के आदिवासी भी रबर से परिचित थे और इससे टोकरियां, बर्तन आदि बनाते थे। 17वीं और 18वीं शताब्दी में रबर का प्रचार सारे संसार में हो गया। विज्ञान ने जैसे-जैसे तरक्की की, रबर के नये-नये वितान खुलते गये। इसका प्रयोग ट्यूब, टायर, वाटर प्रूफ कपड़ों, जूते, औद्योगिक ट्यूब बनने के साथ ही विभिन्न प्रकार के दैनिक उपयोग की वस्तुओं को बनाने में भी होने लगा। आज रबर आधुनिक सभ्यता की एक महत्वपूर्ण प्रतीक मानी जाती है।
अनानास : इस घुमक्कड़ को भा गया भारत
संसार के समस्त रबर उत्पादन का लगभग 78 प्रतिशत वाहनों के टायर-ट्यूब बनाने में खप जाता है। शेष का इस्तेमाल जूते, चप्पल, बिजली के तार, खिलौने, बरसाती कपड़े, चादर, खेल के सामान, बोतल, बर्फ के थैले, मेडिकल उपकरण, औद्योगिक इस्तेमाल के ट्यूब आदि बनाने में होता है। अब तो रबर की सड़कें भी बनने लगी हैं।

रबर का इस्तेमाल अब सजावटी पौधे की तरह भी होने लगा है। दरअसल, रबर के पौधे का औषधीय महत्व पता चलने के बाद इसे गमले में लगाकर घरों में रखने का चलन तेजी से बढ़ा। रबर का पौधा एक शक्तिशाली एयर प्यूरीफायर है जो हवा में मौजूद खतरनाक कणों को सोख कर उसे प्रदूषण मुक्त कर देता है। इस कारण सांस की बीमारियों से पीड़ित लोगों के लिए यह बहुत लाभदायक है।
