कैलास मन्दिर महाराष्ट्र के औरंगाबाद जिले के एलोरा स्थित लयण-श्रृंखला में है। औरंगाबाद से करीब 30 किलोमीटर दूर स्थित यह मन्दिर दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी अखण्ड संरचना है जिसे एक ही चट्टान को काट कर बनाया गया है।

वर्षों बाद मिले और अब घुमक्कड़ हो चुके एक मित्र ने बातों-बातों में एकाएक सवाल किया, “क्या तुमने भारत का सबसे बड़ा अजूबा देखा है?” जवाब में मैंने कहा, “हां ताजमहल भी देखा है और कोणार्क भी।” इस जवाब को सुन वह ठठा कर हंस पड़ा, “कुछ नहीं देखा दोस्त, कभी एलोरा का कैलास मन्दिर देख आओ, नतमस्तक हो जाओगे इसे बनाने वाले वास्तुविद् और शिल्पकारों की कला के समक्ष। भवन बनाने की सामान्य प्रक्रिया है कि पहले बुनियाद पड़ती है और फिर उस पर ढांचा तैयार किया जाता है लेकिन यहां इसके ठीक उलट है। यह मन्दिर ऊपर से नीचे की ओर बनाया गया है। सबसे बड़ी बात यह कि यह पूरा मन्दिर एक ही शिला को तराश कर बनाया गया है।”
मैं सचमुच विस्मित था अपने दोस्त के बातें सुनकर और खुद से ही सवाल किया कि मैंने अब तक इस कैलास मन्दिर के दर्शन किये क्यों नहीं। इसके बाद इस मन्दिर के बारे में रिसर्च शुरू की। इसके अनुसार अपने ढंग का यह अनूठा मन्दिर वास्तुकला का अनुपम उदाहरण है। इसका निर्माण मालखेड स्थित राष्ट्रकूट वंश के नरेश कृष्ण (प्रथम) (757-783 ईस्वी) ने विरुपाक्ष मन्दिर से प्रेरित होकर कराया था। यह महाराष्ट्र के औरंगाबाद जिले के एलोरा स्थित लयण-श्रृंखला में है। औरंगाबाद से करीब 30 किलोमीटर दूर स्थित यह मन्दिर दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी अखण्ड संरचना है जिसे एक ही चट्टान को काट कर बनाया गया है।
बहरहाल, कैलास मन्दिर (Kailash Temple of Ellora) जाने का कार्यक्रम तय हुआ और एक दिन मैं दिल्ली के निजामुद्दीन रेलवे स्टेशन से सम्पर्क क्रांति एक्सप्रेस में सवार हो गया। हालांकि दिल्ली के रेलवे स्टेशनों से औरंगाबाद और मनमाड के लिए कई अन्य ट्रेन भी हैं पर सम्पर्क क्रांति एक्सप्रेस से लगाव और समय बचाने के लिए इसी ट्रेन को चुना। मनमाड से औरंगाबाद और वहां से एलोरा सड़क मार्ग से पहुंचा। खूबसूरत पहाड़ों और घाटियों से गुजरने वाली इन सड़कों पर यात्रा करने का अलग ही मजा है जो हवाई जहाज से की गयी यात्रा में कभी नहीं मिल सकता।
कहा जाता है कि भगवान शिव को समर्पित कैलास मंदिर (Kailash Temple of Ellora) को बनाने में करीब 7000 मजदूर लगे थे। इसके बारे में लिखित सामग्री कम है पर जो कुछ भी जानकारी है, उसके अनुसार इसको अन्तिम रूप देने में करीब डेढ़ सौ साल लगे थे। हालांकि कुछ लोगों का मानना है कि यह मन्दिर 18 वर्षों में तैयार हुआ था। यूनेस्को ने इसे वर्ष 1983 में विश्व विरासत स्थल घोषित किया था।
यह भव्य मन्दिर दरअसल एलोरा की गुफा नम्बर 16 यानि सबसे बड़ी गुफा है जिसमें सबसे ज्यादा खुदाई कार्य किया गया है। इस दो मंजिले मन्दिर को किसी मूर्ति की तरह तराश कर मन्दिर का रूप दिया गया है। अपनी समग्रता में 276 फीट लम्बा और 154 फुट चौड़ा यह मन्दिर केवल एक चट्टान को काटकर बनाया गया है। इसका निर्माण ऊपर से नीचे की ओर किया गया है। इसके निर्माण के क्रम में अनुमानत: 40 हज़ार टन भार के पत्थरों को चट्टान से हटाया गया। पहले पर्वत खंड अलग किया गया और फिर इस पर्वत खंड को भीतर-बाहर से काट-काट कर 90 फुट ऊंचा मंदिर गढ़ा गया। मन्दिर के अंदर और बाहर चारों ओर देव प्रतिमाओं समेत विभिन्न प्रकार की आकृतियां बनायी गयी हैं। मुख्य द्वार पर गजलक्ष्मी की मूर्ति है। इस मन्दिर के निर्माण में कहीं भी ईंट, गारे या चूने का इस्तेमाल नहीं हुआ है।
समय की मार से कैलास मन्दिर को यद्यपि काफी क्षति पहुंची है पर ज्यादातर भाग अब भी सुरक्षित है। कहा जाता है कि इस मन्दिर के आंगन के तीन ओर कोठरियों की पांत थी जो एक सेतु द्वारा मन्दिर के ऊपरी खंड से जुड़ी हुई थी। वह सेतु अब गिर चुका है। सामने खुले मंडप में नन्दी है और उसके दोनों ओर विशालकाय हाथी और स्तंभ बने हैं।
इस मन्दिर में नियमित रूप से पूजा-अर्चना किए जाने का कोई प्रमाण नहीं मिलता है। यहां कोई पुजारी भी नहीं है। कभी-कभार कोई पर्यटक शिवलिंग और प्रतिमाओं पर पुष्ण चढ़ा जाए तो बात अलग है।
कैलास मन्दिर के आसपास घूमने योग्य स्थान
छोटा कैलास मन्दिर : छोटा कैलास मन्दिर कैलास मन्दिर से करीब दो किलोमीटर दूर गुफा संख्या 30 में है जो जैन गुफाओं की श्रृंखला में पहली गुफा है। इसे कैलास मन्दिर का अधूरा संस्करण कहा जाता है।
रावण की खायी : कैलास मन्दिर से 350 मीटर दूर स्थित गुफा संख्या 14 को रावण की खायी के नाम से जाना जाता है। सातवीं शताब्दी के दौरान इसे बौद्ध विहार में परिवर्तित किया गया था।
इन्द्र सभा : इन्द्र सभा कैलास मन्दिर के उत्तर में लगभग दो किलोमीटर की दूरी पर गुफा संख्या 32 में स्थित है। यह एक एक जैन गुफा है। एलोरा में नौवीं और दसवीं शताब्दी के दौरान की पांच जैन गुफाएं हैं जोकि सभी दिगम्बर सम्प्रदाय से सम्बद्ध हैं।
धो ताल गुफा : धो ताल (दो ताल) गुफा एलोरा बस स्टैंड और कैलाश मन्दिर से लगभग 600 मीटर की दूरी पर स्थित है। यह गुफा एलोरा में बौद्ध धर्म से सम्बन्धित 12 गुफाओं में से एक है। इस गुफा के दो स्तर हैं और इसलिए इसे पहले दो ताल या दो मंजिला के रूप में जाना जाता है। 1876 ईस्वी में इस गुफा में एक तहखाना खोजा गया। यानि यहां अब कुल तीन मंजिल हो गयी हैं लेकिन इसके बाद भी इसका नाम धो ताल ही बना हुआ है।
रामेश्वर गुफा : यह गुफा भगवान शंकर को समर्पित है। इसी गुफा में भगवान भोलेनाथ की एक लिंग के रूप पूजा-अर्चना की गई थी। गुफा में एक मंच के ऊपर लिंग के ठीक सामने नंदीश्वर महाराज को स्थापित किया गया है। गुफा के अंदर गर्भगृह और मंडप है। मन्दिर के प्रवेश द्वार पर देवी गंगा और देवी यमुना की मूर्तियां हैं।
विश्वकर्मा गुफा : विश्वकर्मा गुफा बस स्टॉप से 600 मीटर और कैलास मन्दिर से 500 मीटर की दूरी पर है। एलोरा की यह 10वीं गुफा है। यह एलोरा की बौद्ध गुफाओं में सबसे अधिक प्रसिद्ध है। विश्वकर्मा गुफा को सुतार का झोपड़ा के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। गुफा के प्रांगण में भगवान बुद्ध का एक मंदिर है।
दशावतार गुफा : एलोरा की 15वीं गुफा दशावतार गुफा का नाम से जानी जाती है और हिन्दू धर्म से सम्बन्धित है। यह गुफा संख्या 14 के नजदीक स्थित है। इसके पास की गुफा संख्या 13 से 29 तक सभी गुफाएं हिन्दू धर्म से सम्बन्धित हैं जोकि पहाड़ी के पश्चिमी छोर पर हैं। दशावतार गुफा एक दो मंजिला इमारत है जिसके प्रांगण में एक मंडप है। प्रारम्भ में यह एक बौद्ध मठ था लेकिन बाद में इसे शिव मन्दिर में परिवर्तित कर दिया गया।
तीन ताल गुफा : एलोरा की गुफा संख्या 12 को तीन ताल गुफा के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। यह महाराष्ट्र का सबसे बड़ा मठ परिसर है। इसमें 118 फीट लम्बा और 34 फीट चौड़ा एक विशाल हॉल है। इस हॉल को 8 वर्गकार खम्भों की पंक्तियों में तीन गलियारों में विभाजित किया गया है।
श्री भद्र मारुति मंदिर : यह मन्दिर एलोरा की गुफाओं से करीब तीन किलोमीटर दूर औरंगजेब के मकबरे के पास है। एलोरा गुफा के नजदीक ही स्थित श्री भद्र मारुति मन्दिर भगवान हनुमान को समर्पित है और यहां उनको विश्राम की अवस्था में देखा जा सकता है। यहां बजरंगबली की मूर्ति का चित्रण सोने से किया गया है।
दौलताबाद का किला : दौलताबाद में स्थित यह किला भारत के सबसे मजबूत दुर्गों में शामिल है। दौलताबाद की सामरिक स्थिति बहुत ही महत्वपूर्ण है। यह उत्तर और दक्षिण भारत के मध्य में पड़ता है। तत्कालीन राजाओं और बादशाहों का मानना था कि यहां से पूरे भारत पर शासन किया जा सकता है। इसी कारण बादशाह मुहम्मद बिन तुगलक ने इसे अपनी राजधानी बनाया था। दौलताबाद का प्राचीन नाम देवगिरि है। इस किले को घूमने में दो से तीन घंटे का समय लगता है।
घृष्णेश्वर महादेव मन्दिर : भगवान शिव को समर्पित यह मन्दिर दौलताबाद से 11 किलोमीटर दूर वेरुलगांव के पास है। द्वादश ज्योतिर्लिंगों में यह अंतिम ज्योतिर्लिंग है। कुछ लोग इसे घुश्मेश्वर के नाम से भी पुकारते हैं। इस मन्दिर का निर्माण महारानी अहिल्याबाई होल्कर ने करवाया था।
अजन्ता की गुफाएं : अजन्ता की गुफाएं एलोरा से लगभग 100 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित हैं। इनको घूमने-देखने के लिए चार से पांच घन्टे से समय निकाल कर जायें।
एलोरा के दर्शनीय स्थलों में गुफा संख्या 33 और 34, गुफा संख्या 6 से 9, गुफा संख्या 17 से 20, गुफा संख्या 22 से 28, औरंगजेब का मकबरा और खुल्दाबाद शामिल हैं।
कैलास मन्दिर जाने का सबसे अच्छा समय
ये गुफाएं पर्यटकों के लिए पूरे साल खुली रहती हैं लेकिन अक्टूबर से फरवरी के दौरान यहां घूमना सबसे आनन्ददायक है। इस दौरान यहां का मौसम हल्का सर्द होता है। ऐसे में धूप परेशान नहीं करती है और हल्की बहती ठन्डी हवा थकान को दूर भगा देती है। मार्च से जून तक यहां गर्मी का मौसम होता है। इस मौसम में यहां घूमने का कार्यक्रम न बनाना ही अच्छा है क्योंकि दोपहर के समय तापमान 40 डिग्री से अधिक हो जाता है। जून के अंत से अक्टूबर तक यहां मानसून का मौसम रहता है। इस दौरान तेज बारिश होने पर परेशानी हो सकती है।
ऐसे पहुंचें औरंगाबाद
सड़क मार्ग : औरंगाबाद महाराष्ट्र के सभी प्रमुख शहरों से सड़क मार्ग से जुड़ा हुआ है। औरंगाबाद से कैलास मन्दिर करीब 30 किमी है जहां तक बस, टैक्सी आदि से पहुंचा जा सकता है।
रेल मार्ग : औरंगाबाद रेलवे स्टेशन के लिए दिल्ली से कई ट्रेन हैं। इसके अलवा कुछ ही दूरी पर मनमाड जंक्शन भी है जो देश के प्रमुख स्थानों से रेलसेवा से जुड़ा है।
वायु मार्ग : औरंगाबाद में अंतरराष्ट्रीय एयरपोर्ट है। यहां के लिए देश के सभी प्रमुख हवाईअड्डों से उड़ानें हैं। इस एयरपोर्ट से कैलास मन्दिर करीब 35 किलोमीटर पड़ता है।
