जब भी कुपोषण की बात चलती है तो हमारा ध्यान छोटे बच्चों और किशोरों की तरफ जाता है या फिर गरीबों की ओर। आज हम एक ऐसी समस्या पर बात करेंगे जिस पर न तो सरकारों का ध्यान जा रहा है और ना ही आम लोगों का। हम लोग छोटे बच्चों को देखकर और उनका वजन लेकर कुपोषण का पता आसानी से लगा लेते हैं। गरीब लोगों के भी अस्थि-पंजर शरीर को देखकर भी हम समझ जाते हैं कि यह व्यक्ति कुपोषण का शिकार है। लेकिन, आजकल लोगों में एक ऐसा कुपोषण फैल रहा है जिसे देख कर पता लगा पाना असंभव-सा है क्योंकि व्यक्ति देखने में हृष्ट-पुष्ट होता है, उसका वजन सामान्य भी हो सकता है और आवश्कता से अधिक भी हो सकता है। चूंकि देखने में हृष्ट-पुष्ट होने के कारण उस व्यक्ति का स्वयं का और डॉक्टर का भी ध्यान उसके कुपोषण के प्रति नहीं जाता है इसलिए इसे छुपा हुआ कुपोषण ही कहेंगे। अंग्रेजी में इसे Hidden malnutrition कहते हैं। इसमें हमारा पेट तो भर रहा होता है लेकिन हम फिर भी कुपोषित होते हैं। इस कुपोषण के कारण व्यक्ति दिन प्रतिदिन गम्भीर बीमारियों की चपेट में आता जाता है। इन बीमारियों को हम कई नाम दे सकते हैं, इनके अलग-अलग लक्षण हो सकते हैं पर अधिकतर के मूल में छुपा हुआ कुपोषण यानी Hidden malnutrition ही होता है।
