मन्दिर की दीवारों पर मौजूद शिलालेख इसकी समृद्ध विरासत का प्रमाण देते हैं। मन्दिर में मुख्य देवता यानि भगवान शिव के साथ-साथ भुवनेश्वरी और पम्पा समेत कई अन्य देवी-देवताओं की मूर्तियां भी हैं। ये मूर्तियां पौराणिक कहानियों पर आधारित हैं।

माना जाता है कि हम्पी ही रामायण काल का किष्किन्धा है। विरूपाक्ष मन्दिर में स्थापित शिवलिंग की कहानी लंकाधिपति रावण से जुड़ी हुई है। यह शिवलिंग दक्षिण की ओर झुका हुआ है। पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार रावण जब शिवजी के दिये हुए शिवलिंग को लेकर लंका जा रहा था तो उसे लघुशंका लगने पर यहां पर रुकना पड़ा। निवृत्त होने के लिए उसने शिवलिंग को एक वृद्ध आदमी (भगवान विष्णु) को पकड़ने के लिए दे दिया। उस बूढ़े आदमी ने शिवलिंग को जमीन पर रख दिया। इस पर यह शिवलिंग यहीं पर स्थिर हो गया और रावण लाख कोशिशों के बाद भी इसे हिला नहीं सका। मन्दिर की दीवारों पर इस प्रसंग के चित्र बने हुए हैं जिनमें रावण शिव से पुनः शिवलिंग को उठाने की प्रार्थना कर रहा है और भगवान शिव इन्कार कर देते हैं।
