भारत में कई ठंडे रेगिस्तान भी हैं। हिमाचल प्रदेश का लाहौल-स्पीति भी ऐसा ही सर्द रेगिस्तान है जहां साल में बमुश्किल ढाई सौ दिन ही धूप निकलती है। यहां बारिश कभी-कभार ही बड़ी मुश्किल से होती है और किसी भी मौसम में हिमपात हो सकता है।

सहारा और थार जैसे मरुस्थलों के बारे में तो आप जानते ही होंगे जहां हरियाली के दर्शन दुर्लभ हैं, तपती रेत और गर्म हवा के थपेड़े हर कदम पर इम्तिहान लेते हैं। लेकिन, भारत में कई ठंडे रेगिस्तान भी हैं। हिमाचल प्रदेश का लाहौल-स्पीति भी ऐसा ही सर्द रेगिस्तान है जहां साल में बमुश्किल ढाई सौ दिन ही धूप निकलती है। यहां बारिश कभी-कभार ही बड़ी मुश्किल से होती है और किसी भी मौसम में हिमपात हो सकता है। यहां के पहाड़ और पर्वत प्रायः बंजर हैं। मीलों तक किसी पौधे के दर्शन नहीं होते। हालांकि कुछ स्थानों पर जड़ी-बूटियों के पौधे तथा पेड-पौधों की लुप्तप्राय प्रजातियां मिलती हैं। शहरों की भीड़भाड़ से दूर कुछ सुकून के पल से बिताना चाहते हैं तो लाहौल-स्पीति (Lahaul-Spiti) आपके लिए उपयुक्त गंतव्य है। (Lahaul-Spiti: Cold desert of Himachal Pradesh)
स्पीति (Spiti) शब्द का अर्थ है “द मिडिल लैंड”। अपने इस नाम के अनुरूप स्पीति घाटी भारत को तिब्बत से अलग करती है। स्पीति घाटी को “लिटिल तिब्बत” के नाम से भी जाना जाता है क्योंकि यहां की वनस्पति, जलवायु और परिदृश्य तिब्बत के सामान हैं। यहां पहाड़ों से नीचे उतरती नदियां तेज धार के साथ बहती हैं और बादलों के बीच से झांकते आसमां का रंग भी कुछ अलग ही तरह का नीला है।
लाहौल ((Lahaul) साहसिक खेलों के शौकीनों के लिए स्वर्ग के समान हैं। यहां दुनिया के कुछ सबसे अच्छे ट्रैक और स्की क्षेत्र हैं। यहां आप स्कीइंग, ट्रैकिंग, बाइकिंग और रिवर राफ्टिंग जैसी गतिविधियों का भरपूर आनन्द ले सकते हैं। काजा-लंगज़ा-हिकिम-कोमिक-काजा, काजा-की-किब्बर-गेटे-काजा, काजा-लोसार-कुजुम ला और काजा-तबो-सुमो-नाकोइन यहां के लोकप्रिय ट्रैकिंग रूट हैं।
हिमालय के शिखरों से घिरी स्पिति घाटी भारत के सबसे ठंडे स्थानों में से एक है। इस क्षेत्र में साल में केवल 250 दिन ही धूप रहती है। यहां की प्राचीन झीलें, दर्रे और नीला आसमान पर्यटकों को बेहद आकर्षित करते हैं। स्पीति यहां की मुख्य नदी है जो किन्नौर जिले के खाब नामक स्थान पर सतलज में मिल जाती है। पिन नदी स्पीति की सहायक नदी है। चन्द्र और भागा नाम की दो नदियां क्रमशः लाहुल-स्पीति के बरेलाचा दर्रे के दक्षिण-पश्चिम और उत्तर-पश्चिम फेस से निकलती हैं। आगे चलकर दोनों का विलय होने के साथ ही यह चिनाब नदी बन जाती है।
लाहौल-स्पीति जिले का मुख्यालय केलांग है। 1960 में हिमाचल प्रदेश के दो जिलों लाहौल और स्पीति का आपस में विलय कर इस जिले का गठन किया गया था। विलय के पूर्व लाहौल का मुख्यालय करदंग जबकि स्पीति का मुख्यालय दनकर था।
हिमाच्छादित पर्वत शिखरों से घिरा होने के कारण लाहौल-स्पीति वर्ष के ज्यादातर महीनों में शेष दुनिया से कटा रहता था। रोहतांग दर्रा 3,978 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर लाहौल-स्पीति को कुल्लू घाटी से पृथक करता है। वर्ष 2021 में अटल टनल का उद्घाटन होने के बाद लाहौल तक पहुंचना आसान हो गया है। अब यह रास्ता लगभग पूरे साल खुला रहता है। जिले़ की पूर्वी सीमा तिब्बत से मिलती है। इसके उत्तर में हिमाचल प्रदेश का ही किन्नौर जिला और केन्द्रशासित प्रदेश लद्दाख हैं। कुल्लू इसके दक्षिण में है।
प्रमुख दर्शनीय स्थल
रोहतांग दर्रा (Rohtang Pass) :
समुद्रतट से 3978 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थित रोहतांग दार्रा (पास) और इससे आगे जाने के लिए परमिट की जरूरत पड़ती है। रोहतांग पास जाने का सबसे अच्छा समय जून से अक्टूबर तक का है। इस दौरान यहां का मौसम सर्वाधिक सुहावना रहता है। ट्रैकिंग के लिए यह बढ़िया जगह है। यहां ऊंची चोटियां, ग्लेशियर और झरनों का मनोरम नजारा देखने को मिलता है। रोहतांग पास एकमात्र ऐसी जगह है जो सालभर बर्फ से ढकी रहती है। बॉलीवुड की कई फिल्मों की शूटिंग यहां हुई है।
ह्म्ता दर्रा : समुद्रतट से 4270 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थिति हम्ता दर्रे को चन्द्रताल का प्रवेश द्वार कहा जा सकता है। यह जगह एक बालकनी की तरह है जहां से आप बर्फ से ढके शिखरों से लेकर घास के मैदान और हरे-भरे वनों तक के खूबसूरत नजारे देख सकते हैं।
म्यूलिंग वैली : इस सुन्दर-दुर्गम राह पर बनते गये रिश्ते
जुम दर्रा : समुद्र तल से 4551 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थित जुम दर्रे को तिब्बती लोग कुजुम पास कहते हैं। यह इस क्षेत्र का सबसे ऊंचा मार्ग है जो लाहौल घाटी और स्पीति घाटी को कुल्लू घाटी से जोड़ता है। यहां से बारा शिग्री ग्लेशियर का अद्भुत नज़ारा देखने को मिलता है। कुजुम पास का नाम यहां पर स्थित कुजुम माता मन्दिर के नाम पर पड़ा है। यह माना जाता है की जिसका मन सच्चा होता है, उसके हाथ का सिक्का माता की मूर्ति पर चिपक जाता है। इस कारण श्रद्धालु अपनी आस्था को प्रकट करने के लिए माता की मूर्ति पर सिक्के को चिपकाने का प्रयास करते हैं।
काजा :
स्पीति घाटी में समुद्र तल से 3,800 मीटर ऊंचाई पर पहाड़ों के बीच स्थित काजा स्पीति क्षेत्र का एक महत्वपूर्ण व्यापारिक केन्द्र है। इसके चारों ओर बर्फीले पहाड़, मठ आदि हैं।
किब्बर गांव :
स्पीति में समु्द्र तल से 4328 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थित किब्बर गांव को सड़क पहुंच वाले दुनिया के सबसे ऊंचे गांव का दर्जा प्राप्त है। इतनी ऊंचाई पर खड़े होकर ऐसा लगता है मानो आसमान अधिक दूर नहीं है। बस थोडा़-सा हवा में ऊपर उठो और आसमान छू लो। यह काजा से 17 किलोमीटर दूर है।
पिन वैली नेशनल पार्क :
स्पीति घाटी के ठंडे रेगिस्तानी क्षेत्र में स्थित पिन वैली नेशनल पार्क लुप्तप्राय हिम तेंदुए और साइबेरियन आइबेक्स के आवास के लिए जाना जाता है। यहां का वानस्पतिक घनत्व अत्यन्त विरल है। इसके बावजूद इस स्थान को विभिन्न प्रकार की औषधीय जड़ी-बूटियों और लुप्तप्राय पौधों की प्रजातियां के स्रोत के रूप में जाना जाता है।
धनकड़ झील :
धनकड़ गांव से 45 किमी की दूरी पर समुद्र तल से 4136 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थित धनकड़ झील कई मामलों में अनूठी है। इस झील के हरे-भरे वातावरण में आपको कई रंग एकसाथ देखने को मिल जायेंगें। गर्मी के मौसम में इसका पानी भाप बनकर उड़ जाता है और उस समय स्थानीय चरवाहे अपने मवेशियों को भरपेट हरा चारा खिलाने के लिए यहां लाते हैं। यहां से हिमालय की सबसे सुन्दर चोटियों में से एक मनिरंग के दर्शन किये जा सकते हैं।
चन्द्रताल झील (Chandratal Lake) : चन्द्र नदी की ओर मुख किए हुए समुद्र टापू पठार पर स्थिति है चन्द्रताल झील। अर्ध चन्द्राकार होने की वजह से इसे चन्द्रताल कहा जाता है। चन्द्रताल ट्रैकिंग के लिए भी प्रसिद्ध है। कुजुम पास और बटल से यहां पहुंचा जा सकता है। समुद्र तल से 4300 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थित इस झील के पास आप कैम्पिंग भी कर सकते हैं।
सूरज ताल : समुद्र तल से 4,950 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थित भारत की तीसरी सबसे बड़ी उच्च क्षेत्रीय झील है सूरज ताल। स्पीति घाटी में स्थित इस झील का शाब्दिक अर्थ है “सूर्य देवता की झील”। यह मनाली-लेह मार्ग पर बारालाचा दर्रे के ठीक नीचे स्थित है। यह स्थान ट्रैकिंग और बाइकिंग के लिए प्रसिद्ध है।
त्रिलोकनाथ मन्दिर :
चन्द्रभाग घाटी में स्थित त्रिलोकनाथ मन्दिर का निर्माण 10वीं शताब्दी में हुआ था। इसे पहले टुंडा विहार के नाम से जाना जाता था। इस मन्दिर में हिन्दुओं के साथ-साथ बौद्ध धर्म के लोगों की आस्था भी जुड़ी हुई है। यहां एक ही मूर्ति को अलग-अलग नामों से हिन्दुओं और बौद्धों द्वारा पूजा जाता है। हिन्दू अपने आराध्य को भगवान शिव जबकि बौद्ध आर्य अवलोकितेश्वर के रूप में पूजते हैं।
धनकड़ गोम्पा : समुद्र तल से 3,894 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर एक पहाड़ी पर स्थिति है धनकड़ गोम्पा जो करीब एक हजार साल पुराना बताया जाता है। यहां एक और मठ भी है जिसका उद्घाटन दलाई लामा ने किया था। कठोर वातावरण और दुर्गम भौगोलिक स्थिति वाले इस स्थान को दुनिया के 100 सबसे लुप्तप्राय स्थलों में से एक कहा जाता है। यह स्थान काजा से करीब 40 किमी दूर है।
की गोम्पा : इस मठ की स्थापना 11वीं शताब्दी में हुई थी। लाहौल-स्पीति में स्थित बौद्ध मठों में सबसे बड़े इस मठ को काई मठ भी कहा जाता है। यह समुद्र तल से 4,166 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर एक सुरम्य पहाड़ी पर स्थित है।
ताबो मठ :
996 ईस्वी में स्थापित ताबो मठ भारत में सबसे पुराने संचालित बौद्ध मठों में से एक है। इसको भारतीय पुरातत्व सर्वेक्षण द्वारा भी संरक्षित किया गया है और यह यूनेस्को की विश्व धरोहर स्थलों की सूची में शामिल है। रॉक पेंटिंग और पत्थर पर नक्काशी के कारण इसे “हिमालय का अजन्ता” भी कहा जाता है।
ग्यू ममी :
ग्यू स्पीति घाटी का एक छोटा-सा गांव है जो बौद्ध भिक्षु सांघा तेजिंग की ममी के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। इसी के चलते इस स्थान को ग्यू ममी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।
चौसठ योगिनी मन्दिर : इसकी वास्तुकला से प्रेरित है भारत का पुराना संसद भवन

वायु मार्ग : निकटतम हवाई अड्डा भुन्तर एयरपोर्ट (कुल्लू) लाहौल से करीब 85 किलोमीटर दूर है।
रेल मार्ग : लाहौल का निकटतम रेलवे स्टेशन चण्डीगढ़ यहां से करीब 219 किमी और जोगिन्दर नगर (मण्डी जिला) करीब 235 किमी दूर है। शिमला रेलवे स्टेशन लाहौल से 178 किमी पड़ता है जहां के लिए कालका से टॉय ट्रेन चलती है।
सड़क मार्ग : लाहौल-स्पीति जिले में सड़क मार्ग से दो अलग-अलग स्थानों से प्रवेश किया जा सकता है। स्पिति घाटी में प्रवेश के लिए सुमदो (किन्नौर जिला) के माध्यम से है और लाहौल घाटी में प्रवेश के लिए मनाली (कुल्लू जिला) के माध्यम से। मनाली से स्पीति तक का सफर करीब 202 किमी का है।
